A college assignment entailed research into innovative accessories. Namely, 'Fashion's Bit On The Side', accessories are used in fashion as an extension of an outfit and are necessary for adding personality, theme and atmosphere whether on the runway or on the high street.
A trip to the Eden Project in Cornwall provided the inspiration for this project, with the beautiful colour, structure and texture of plants informing every aspect of my design journey. Focusing on AW14 trends, I was fascinated with the innovation of Issey Miyake, Prada, Fendi and Givenchy, experimenting with the function of a bag and how to hold one. I began experimenting myself with different ways that bags could be held, over the shoulder, tied on the wrist or around the waist - venturing swiftly into the world of sporrans. With my kimono already designed for women's wear, I started to consider the idea of designing for a man and how I would turn something so feminine into something vaguely masculine. A round neck, rugged exposed seams and decreased material around the arms transformed my design.
I am a very ambitious designer, and felting this entire kimono was a challenge but this particular assignment has grown me as a designer, broadened my possibilities and I am genuinely proud of the final outcome!
